SD, microSD, CF and CFexpress cards come to this bench from working pros and families alike, and the pictures usually make the trip home again.

The twenty-five ways they let go

First job on any memory card is putting the symptoms against the fault — after twenty-odd years, these twenty-five account for nearly everything that comes through the door.

Blank looks from every reader

Camera, card reader and laptop all shrug together: controller or firmware death. The photographs sit in the NAND behind the silence, unbothered.

The format ultimatum

A torn file table, not lost pictures. Saying yes to that dialog is the one reliable way to make it worse — so say nothing and send the card.

Shots deleted in a hurry

Frames persist in flash until new ones land on top. Into the drawer with it, and most of a deleted folder walks home.

Format button, wrong moment

Cameras quick-format, nothing more. The shoot underneath generally survives whole and carves straight out.

Folded, cracked, creased

Cards bend in slots, wallets and cheap adapters. If the fracture spared the internal tracks, we probe the die directly and read on.

A 128GB card claiming 30MB

That's the controller's fallback persona after a crash. From here the work is chip-level, and routine.

Read-only and staying that way

A dying controller self-locks; a nudged SD slider mimics it exactly. One is a ten-second fix — we check in that order.

Puddles, pockets, washing machines

Cards outlast their accidents remarkably well. Cleaned, stabilised, then read at chip level, whatever the misadventure.

Counterfeit sizes

Fakes fold new writes over one small genuine chip once it fills. Everything recorded before the fold-over is fair game for recovery.

Yanked mid-copy

Half-moved files and a file table cut off mid-word. The frames get carved from a raw capture rather than trusted to the wreck.

Dashcams that looped too long

Circular recording spends flash in a couple of years flat. Carving the surviving blocks brings the footage back — the clip that matters usually included.

Ultras and Extremes die at the controller over healthy NAND more than any pattern our card log records. Chip-level work, well practised.

Monolithic microSD, no chips to lift

Everything sealed in one slab. We map its test points against the pinout archive and speak to the memory directly.

CFexpress and XQD at speed

Type B cards from drones and mirrorless rigs fail hard at cinema bit-rates — wedding films at the county's venues, survey passes over the coast. They're PCIe inside, so the NVMe side handles them.

Salvage from a downed drone

Bent, cracked, and interrupted mid-write: physical harm layered over logical mess. Worked in strictly that order, usually to a good ending.

Roasted in an action camera

Long continuous sequences can hang Lexar's Professional line and scramble a shoot's tail end. Rebuilt from a raw read of the card.

The final clip that won't open

Power failed before the index was written, so the file has no moov atom and players refuse it. We rebuild it from the stream data itself.

Opens fine; every file is empty

Wear-table corruption serves up a mounted card full of zero-byte ghosts. The real contents are still in the flash awaiting a re-map.

Static handshake between bodies

Cold, dry day; card passed hand to hand; controller takes the spark. Invisible, instant, and repairable at chip level.

The £3 reader that cost a shoot

No-name readers over-volt cards and drop them mid-write on a wobbly plug. The card inherits the savings; chip-level reads settle the account.

Adopted by an Android phone

Formatted as internal storage means encrypted to that specific handset. Without the working phone it stays sealed — said plainly, and phones are not our line.

Why cards deserve more caution than they get

A memory card is a shaving of NAND with a small controller, boxed in plastic — no shock mounting, no redundancy, no spare anything. A memory card recovery service worth the name images the whole card before touching a single file, so the original never takes a second hit; that first sector-level copy is also why DIY attempts that went wrong elsewhere are often still rescuable here. SD in every speed class, microSD out of dashcams and drones, CompactFlash from older camera bodies, XQD and CFexpress from current pro kit — the routine doesn't change.

Snapped, creased and stone-dead cards

Broken cards go to the chip bench. A microSD is monolithic — memory, controller and contacts sealed as one piece of silicon — so the route in runs through its test points: probe the memory, take a raw dump, then rebuild that dump into photographs and clips a computer can open. Everything hangs on whether the snap spared the internal tracks, and the free assessment settles that question before money gets discussed. An SD card data recovery service can't promise every break; it can promise you'll know your odds before spending a penny.

Engineering tools, not download-and-hope software

Work on cards is microsurgery over bare flash, done on the same specialist rigs as the sticks and single-slab devices:

PC-3000 Flash

Reads the NAND itself and rebuilds the dead controller's arithmetic in software. For a stick or card that answers nothing, this is how conversation resumes.

Chip-off station

Hot-air and infrared profiles tuned so a memory package leaves its ruined board without the stored charge leaving with it. Temperature discipline is the entire trick.

Monolith spider-board adapters

Where there is no chip to lift, test points get identified against our pinout archive and wired out by hand under magnification. Slow, precise, effective.

NAND reconstruction suite

The XOR, ECC and wear-levelling puzzle worked until a raw dump reads as named folders again. Dull mathematics, satisfying endings.

Micro-soldering bench

Lifted pads, torn tracks and sheared plugs rebuilt under the scope. A surprising share of 'dead' sticks need this and nothing else.

Hardware write-blockers

Every card and stick is read through a blocked interface, so the original flash travels home unaltered. That is the whole idea.

Cards logged in recently

Extreme PRO stock and the Ultra SDSQUAB rule the tray, usually via a controller that died over perfectly good NAND. CFexpress Type B is the growth trade: wedding shooters working Yorkshire's venues and drone pilots on coastal jobs push those cards hard, and at cinema bit-rates the failures arrive without notice. A separate caution for dashcam cards — looping simply wears flash out, and that footage returns by carving whichever blocks held on. Counterfeits complete the regulars, corrupting at the moment writes wrap their real size.

Sending it in — easier than you'd think

Nearly every job on our bench arrived by tracked, insured post — it's the quickest, safest route in. There's no collection service, so the parcel is yours to send or hand in.

Is the drive still inside a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac, CCTV / DVR or server? Take the hard drive or SSD out first and post the bare drive on its own — removing drives from machines isn't a service we offer. Storage that's soldered to a motherboard (Apple Silicon Macs, certain slim laptops) is the one thing we can't work on: if it doesn't come out, it can't come in.

  • Bubble wrap and a sturdy box or padded envelope will do nicely — cables, caddies and power bricks can stay at home.
  • Print off the booking-in & shipping form (PDF), add your name, number and a line or two on what happened, and tuck it in the parcel.
  • Royal Mail Special Delivery keeps it tracked and insured the whole way; your own courier does the same job if you'd sooner book one. There's no collection service at this end.

Common questions

Usually, provided the card comes out of service straight away. Deleting clears the index and leaves the images sitting in place until new shots land on top of them. Out of the camera, into an envelope, no test shots on the way.
No. That message is the camera conceding it can no longer read the card's index — the pictures behind the index are almost certainly fine. Formatting writes a clean, empty structure across the top and buries them a layer deeper. Post the card exactly as it stands.
Not automatically. A monolith whose internal tracks stayed intact can still be read straight off the silicon, snapped shell or not. No two breaks behave alike — gather every piece, post the lot, and the free assessment returns a straight yes or no.
Sandwiched in folded cardboard, taped so it can't shift, inside an ordinary envelope — a large-letter stamp covers it. Pop a note in carrying your name and number, address it tracked to our Leeds location, and it's on the bench the next working day. We ring you when it lands.
