Read the message the way an engineer does. 'You need to format this card' reports that the card's index — the filesystem that says which photo lives where — no longer makes sense to the camera or computer. It says nothing about the photos, which sit one layer beneath that index and are nearly always whole. The design's one cruelty is the button it offers with the message: press it and the card starts laying fresh, empty structures directly over the material a recovery would use to bring your pictures back.
Formatting repairs nothing — it papers a blank index over a broken one. A quick format takes seconds to erase the folder tree, the filenames, the dates, everything that makes a shoot findable. If the frames matter — a wedding, a once-off, a season's work — the format waits, permanently.
Blame the cheap parts first. Card readers die young and lie about it, and laptop slots are the least trustworthy readers of all — a standalone USB reader on a second computer is the fairest test a card can get. On full-size SD cards, look at the little lock slider on the edge: knocked down to the locked position, it produces exactly this sort of nonsense, including refusals to write or format.

What matters now is not escalating. Repeated format attempts, chkdsk marathons and 'repair' utilities all pile work onto a controller that is failing precisely because work has become hard for it. A card in this state, holding anything you'd miss, has stopped being a fix-it project and become a recovery case. Treat it like the evidence it is.
