Windows hears it, can't place it

Something enumerates, gibberish follows: controller or firmware failure shouting over your data. The data itself hasn't moved.

0MB, or 'insert a disk'

A controller that woke up with no map of its own flash. Chip-off reading and a software rebuild reunite the two.

Offering you a format

Torn file table above intact files. Turn the offer down flat and post the stick exactly as it is.

Files deleted

Retrievable until the freed space is recycled — not a moment longer. A drawer is now the safest accommodation the stick has.

Spiked through a front port

A storm or a dying PSU sends a surge through the tower's sockets and the resident stick collects it. Controller cremated, NAND usually spared.

Half a decade in a drawer

Stored flash leaks charge, and old archives read back faint. Patient, ECC-heavy imaging keeps what a confident quick read would discard.

'Repaired' into FOUND.000

Windows offered to fix things and delivered a folder of numbered fragments. We ignore the fragments and rebuild the true layout from a raw image.

Keypad-encrypted hardware sticks

Too many wrong PINs and they wipe by design — no lab sweet-talks that away. With the PIN in hand, though, the job turns ordinary.

Snapped necks, mended under the microscope

Call it a flash drive, a memory stick or whatever your office calls it — the weak point never moves: the solder joint where connector meets board, and one knee against a laptop is enough. Torn pads and cracked tracks get rebuilt under magnification; where the board is past saving, the memory comes off and gets read on a programmer instead — the stick's own electronics never have to work again. Students at Heslington snap them, offices at Monks Cross bend them, and a pen drive recovery service ends up seeing the same half-dozen injuries so often the microscope settings barely change between jobs.

Deleted files, virus damage and 'it just died'

Deleted the wrong folder, or come back from a print shop to find every file wearing a shortcut icon? Viruses conceal far more than they destroy, and deleting only marks space as spare — it scrubs nothing. So the drill is short: drawer, unplugged, hands off. Here the stick is imaged end to end and your documents and pictures get carved from that copy, never from the original. Sticks that died without any drama at all take the same route, straight through the chips.

Engineering tools, not download-and-hope software

Stick recovery is chip work at every step, so it lives on the flash rigs from booking-in to hand-back:

Reads the NAND itself and rebuilds the dead controller's arithmetic in software. For a stick or card that answers nothing, this is how conversation resumes.

Chip-off station

Hot-air and infrared profiles tuned so a memory package leaves its ruined board without the stored charge leaving with it. Temperature discipline is the entire trick.

Monolith spider-board adapters

Where there is no chip to lift, test points get identified against our pinout archive and wired out by hand under magnification. Slow, precise, effective.

NAND reconstruction suite

The XOR, ECC and wear-levelling puzzle worked until a raw dump reads as named folders again. Dull mathematics, satisfying endings.

Micro-soldering bench

Lifted pads, torn tracks and sheared plugs rebuilt under the scope. A surprising share of 'dead' sticks need this and nothing else.

Sending it in — easier than you'd think

Nearly every job on our bench arrived by tracked, insured post — it's the quickest, safest route in. There's no collection service, so the parcel is yours to send or hand in.

Is the drive still inside a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac, CCTV / DVR or server? Take the hard drive or SSD out first and post the bare drive on its own — removing drives from machines isn't a service we offer. Storage that's soldered to a motherboard (Apple Silicon Macs, certain slim laptops) is the one thing we can't work on: if it doesn't come out, it can't come in.

  • Bubble wrap and a sturdy box or padded envelope will do nicely — cables, caddies and power bricks can stay at home.
  • Print off the booking-in & shipping form (PDF), add your name, number and a line or two on what happened, and tuck it in the parcel.
  • Royal Mail Special Delivery keeps it tracked and insured the whole way; your own courier does the same job if you'd sooner book one. There's no collection service at this end.

Common questions

Rarely — what matters is whether the NAND itself survived the bend, and it usually does. Most sticks come back through connector repair; wrecked boards get bypassed and the memory read directly. Send every fragment, including the stub left in the port if you can tease it out.
Because the file table is torn and Windows can't read the map — the files behind it are generally fine. Decline, unplug, post it in. A format just stacks a second problem on the first, and we'd only have to dig through both.
Yes, so long as nothing has written over the freed space yet. Each time the stick gets plugged in somewhere new, the odds shorten a little — so it stays in the drawer, and the free assessment tells you precisely what's still there before you decide a thing.
