A light is a low bar, and it's worth knowing exactly what it clears: current is arriving. It says nothing about whether the drive's own software — its firmware — has booted, and firmware is the part most people never suspect because they've never been told it exists. Every hard drive runs a small internal operating system from a reserved area of its own platters, and until that boots cleanly, the drive cannot tell a computer its name, its size, or anything else. Lights on, nobody home describes the state precisely.
The five-device tour matters more than the owner probably knew. One refusal might be a driver, a port, a cable mood. Five refusals across laptops and two different games consoles eliminates the whole category of host-side explanations and leaves only the drive.
