RAID 0 Data Recovery York

One dead member silences a whole RAID 0 — but silenced isn't erased. Bring the complete set and every member is imaged, the stripe's geometry solved, and your files put back together entirely in software.

No RAID quote is guesswork. Free diagnostic first, then one written figure — from £500 + VAT by member count, logical recoveries under no fix, no fee.

// why stripes fall over

Speed paid for with safety

A RAID 0 deals every file out across its full membership and keeps nothing in reserve — the volume survives only as long as its unluckiest disk does.

One member gone, the lot silent

Fragments only, spread across every member — one dead drive and the whole volume goes quiet. The road back is capturing all the members and reassembling the scatter in software.

The bargain that was always struck

No parity, no mirror — that was the price paid for the speed. A stripe can't regrow a missing piece of itself, which leaves disciplined imaging as the only honest route home.

Good disks, failed surroundings

A dead controller, bridge or enclosure routinely strands a healthy set. The job turns into solving the layout of the stripe and raising the volume from captures of each member.

The layout record erased

Re-creating the array, or a firmware wobble, can erase the figures that describe the stripe's layout. Rebuilt with wrong numbers the data reads as static — the true values get dug out of the captures themselves.

Weak sectors with a wide reach

With files interleaved across the set, one patch of failing sectors on one member takes a bite out of hundreds of files. Imaging hardware gathers every readable sector around the rot.

An optimistic format or initialise

Format, initialise and 'repair' run against a broken stripe flatten the on-disk structures a recovery leans against. Already happened? Then hands off from here — power the lot down.

// how raid 0 recovery works

All the members, or it doesn't work

With nothing redundant in the design, every disk holds data no other disk has. Each member goes onto a hardware imager — any physically failed drive visiting the clean bench first — and from those captures we recover member order, block size and the offset where the stripe begins. Reassembly happens in software, a file system is raised on the result, and the files come out — with not one write landing on an original.

Every power-on spends capital

A striped set can't heal itself, and a faltering member surrenders a little more each time the power arrives. The right move is dull: shut everything down, keep the initialise and repair buttons unpressed — each writes over the layout evidence a reconstruction depends on — and get the complete set of disks here exactly as they were found.

Striped sets from York editing rigs and workshops

Video-editing machines, gaming builds, small servers and speed-first NAS units — striped volumes reach this bench from homes and businesses across York, Tadcaster, Middlesbrough and the wider county. All the members travel together to our Leeds location — tracked, insured post, or down the A64 with you. The fuller story sits under RAID recovery and NAS recovery, with prices on the data recovery cost page.

Common questions

Not once the complete set is here. The failed member gets its clean-bench repair, is captured alongside the rest, and the stripe is reassembled in software. Far more of these jobs are lost to running the array on after the failure than to the failure itself.
Because a stripe deals in fragments only — no single disk holds a complete file. Miss one member out and a slice of nearly everything goes missing with it, so bring every disk, and jot the bay order down if you can.
The floor is £500 + VAT, rising disk by disk since every member is imaged separately. Reassembling sound disks is logical work under no fix, no fee; where a member shows electronic, mechanical, physical, water or fire damage, the quote takes half upfront for the invasive stage.
Yes — while the members are sound and the work stays logical, an empty result costs you nothing. The footing only shifts when a damaged member needs physical repair: half upfront, everything confirmed in writing before work opens.
Power off and change nothing. Give initialise, format and repair utilities a wide berth — every one of them stamps on layout evidence the reconstruction needs — then get all the members boxed and the free diagnostic started.

The set gets imaged, the layout solved, your files handed back — free diagnosis, then a written figure.

// getting your device to us

Sending it in — easier than you'd think

Nearly every job on our bench arrived by tracked, insured post — it's the quickest, safest route in. There's no collection service, so the parcel is yours to send or hand in.

Is the drive still inside a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac, CCTV / DVR or server? Take the hard drive or SSD out first and post the bare drive on its own — removing drives from machines isn't a service we offer. Storage that's soldered to a motherboard (Apple Silicon Macs, certain slim laptops) is the one thing we can't work on: if it doesn't come out, it can't come in.

  • Bubble wrap and a sturdy box or padded envelope will do nicely — cables, caddies and power bricks can stay at home.
  • Print off the booking-in & shipping form (PDF), add your name, number and a line or two on what happened, and tuck it in the parcel.
  • Royal Mail Special Delivery keeps it tracked and insured the whole way; your own courier does the same job if you'd sooner book one. There's no collection service at this end.
  • Happier handing it over in person? Reception at the address here takes drop-offs, Mon–Fri 9:00am–5:30pm.
