A USB plug has four pins: two carry power, two carry the conversation. Lose one and the stick goes silent — but silent is all it goes. Start with what a broken pin is not: it is not lost data. The four pins on a USB plug are wiring, nothing more — two feed the stick its power, two carry the signalling — and snapping one is the electrical equivalent of losing the key to a locked shed. Everything inside the shed is exactly where you left it. The memory chip that actually holds the files sits further up the board, and it took no part in the accident.
Whether a new pin can simply be soldered on is a question the microscope answers, not the phone. A clean break at the pin itself, with the solder pad and the copper traces behind it intact, takes a rebuilt joint well; the stick then reads as if nothing had happened. But pads tear, and traces lift, and a break that looked tidy from the kitchen table can turn out to have pulled its foundations up with it. That's why we won't promise a re-solder sight unseen — and why nobody should be freelancing one with a hobby iron, because heat in the wrong place is how a recoverable stick becomes a difficult one.
If the front door won't rebuild, we go in another way. The memory chip is lifted from the board under hot air and read directly in a programmer — no plug involved at any point. What comes off is raw and scrambled, because the stick's controller kept its own private filing order, so that order is reconstructed and the files carved out by their content and checked one by one. Longer road, same destination.
Under the stereo microscope first: the broken pin, the pad beneath it and the traces running back from it all inspected before anything is heated. Where the foundations are sound, a new pin goes on and the stick is read through it. Where they aren't, the NAND chip comes off under hot air, is read on the programmer, and the controller's scrambling is unpicked so PhotoRec can carve the documents and pictures out by content. Everything recovered is verified and handed back on fresh media.
One way or the other, the plug stops being the story. The diagnostic costs nothing and is reported within two working days of the stick reaching the bench, and the price after it is a single written figure that doesn't move. Work at this level — soldering, chip lifting — is physical repair, so half the quote is paid before it starts, with the balance owed only once your files are proven back. If they can't be brought back, the balance never falls due.
Leave it be. Don't press it into the port at an angle to see if it catches, don't wiggle it hopefully, and don't let anyone near it with a soldering iron unless they can show you a microscope first — the pads under those pins tear like paper, and every forced insertion is a fresh roll of the dice. Put the stick in a small box exactly as it is, broken piece included if you have it, and send the lot together.
