Fifteen years is a respectable age for a USB stick, and this one had one last trick in it: the cruellest of the flash failures, the visible-but-unreachable. Any laptop would list the contents — "it recognises the files and names and says they are there but won't open the pics" — which feels like being shown the photographs through glass. What it means, technically, is that the directory has survived while the records connecting each name to its actual content have been damaged, or the content's own storage has grown unreliable beneath them. Listed but unopenable is a filing problem, not an absence — and filing problems are repaired on a copy, never on the ailing original.

A filesystem stores two separable things: the catalogue — names, folders, dates — and the map that says where each file's actual bytes sit. This stick's catalogue has survived intact, which is why every laptop cheerfully lists the photos. The map beneath it hasn't. Ask for a picture and the system follows a damaged pointer to the wrong place, or to a place the stick can no longer read cleanly, and the open fails. The photographs themselves are one layer further down — and at fifteen years old, on early flash, the smart assumption is that most of them are still sitting exactly where they were written.
Age plays a part worth being honest about. Flash memory stores charge, and charge kept unpowered for many years can drift — usually showing up first as exactly this pattern, weak cells making file records unreliable before the bulk data goes anywhere. That's a reason for care, not despair: it means the stick should be read completely, once, soon, and then never relied on again.
The method protects the stick from everything, including us. A write-blocker makes alteration physically impossible while every sector is imaged. All repair then happens on the image: records mended and names relinked where the structures allow, and where they don't, the photos carved straight out of the data by their content — a JPEG announces itself, name or no name. Each recovered picture is opened and eyeballed before it's counted.

Stop opening them — each failed attempt is another read strained through a faltering stick, and if any software offers to 'repair' the drive, decline it; repairs write, and writes are the one thing that makes this worse. Don't copy the files off either, tempting as it looks: a naive copy drags weak cells through the same failing path.
