A Folder With a Question Mark

A MacBook that starts up to "a folder icon with a question mark" is telling you one thing only: it went looking for a system to boot and couldn't find one. An Apple store had already had a look at this 2012 machine and reckoned it was "most likely a problem with the cable attached to the HDD" — a fair call, as it happens, because that cable is a known weak spot on this generation. But the owner's worry wasn't the cable; it was the "important files on the Harddrive". Happily, the question mark is a question about the machine, not about the data — and on a 2012 MacBook the drive unscrews and can be read on its own, whichever part turns out to be at fault.

The flashing question mark is one of Apple's more honest error messages. It doesn't say the disk is dead; it says the Mac looked for a bootable system and came back empty-handed. Between the logic board and the hard drive in a 2012 MacBook runs a thin ribbon cable, and that ribbon has a reputation — it fails often enough that a store suspecting it first is playing the odds sensibly. When the cable dies, a perfectly healthy drive simply vanishes from the machine's view.

The drive comes out of the MacBook and goes straight onto PC-3000 UDMA behind a hardware write-blocker, where its own health — firmware, mechanics, read behaviour — is assessed without the machine's cable anywhere in the chain. A healthy drive is imaged there and then on DeepSpar; a faulty one has its fault addressed first, in clean air if the mechanics demand it. The HFS+ volume is then parsed in R-Studio from the image, and the important files checked and delivered on fresh media.
