Apple Said It Couldn't Be Recovered

Every so often the most useful thing a lab can hand over is a straight answer rather than a job number. A 2019 MacBook Pro had died — it wouldn't turn on — and an Apple store had told its owner "the data couldn't be recovered because it's a newer model", offering instead to "replace the broken part". The owner's question to us was the right one: does keeping the old part leave any chance of the data? Yes — keep the part, always, because 'can't be recovered' from a repair counter means 'we don't do that here', not 'nobody can'. But honesty cuts both ways, and here is ours: a 2019 MacBook Pro's storage is soldered to its logic board, and soldered-storage work sits outside what this bench takes in — we work on drives that can be removed and posted. Two different statements hide inside 'the data couldn't be recovered because it's a newer model'. The true half: from 2016 onward, MacBook Pro storage stopped being a removable drive and became chips soldered to the logic board, married to encryption keys that live in the machine's own security silicon. A repair counter can't lift that data, and swapping the board — the repair on offer — replaces the very chips the files live on. The false half is the word 'couldn't'. What the counter means is that data recovery isn't the service they sell; the repair desk answers repair questions, and it answered one.
