A drive's start-up is a fixed choreography: spin the platters to speed, release the heads, read the service data, report for duty. When it fails identically every time — two grinds, four clicks, stop — you're hearing that choreography hit the same wall at the same step. The grinding says the mechanical stage is a struggle: a motor fighting drag, or heads no longer riding where they should. The four clicks that follow are the heads making four attempts to read, failing four times, and parking. Then the firmware, sensibly, gives up. The precision of the pattern is genuinely useful: it means the fault is consistent, and consistent mechanical faults are the kind a bench can plan around.
What the rhythm absolutely is not is an invitation to keep listening. Grinding involves contact or near-contact somewhere in a machine whose working clearances are measured in nanometres, and the four clicks sweep the heads across the platters four more times per attempt. The data has survived so far because the sequence keeps failing early. Run it enough times and one performance will get further than the others — and further, here, is where surfaces get marked.
The 'suddenly' deserves a word too, because it frightens people into thinking the loss is total.
