Of all the noises a drive can make, the click is the one to believe first time. The click has one meaning at this bench: the read/write heads sweep out to read the platters, fail to find what they expect, snap back to their rest position and try again — click, click, click, each one a failed attempt. Clicking is the sound of heads that can't read any more; it is not the sound of data being lost — unless the drive keeps being powered while it clicks. A hard drive reads by flying its heads a few nanometres above spinning platters — closer, proportionally, than a jet flying at ground level. When heads begin to fail they can no longer make sense of the surface below them, so the drive does the only thing its firmware knows: park, return, try again. That mechanical retry loop is the click. It tells you where the fault is (the heads), and it tells you where the fault isn't (the platters, and your data on them — a recording that doesn't wear out just because the thing reading it has).
The catch is the geometry. Failing heads still fly over the platters on every attempt, and a head that's degrading is a head that can eventually touch down. Contact between head and platter scores the surface, and a scored surface is data gone in a way no lab can vote against. This is why the standard kitchen-table remedies — try it on another computer, leave it running to see if it sorts itself, one more go in the morning — are all the same mistake wearing different clothes. Every additional minute of clicking is spent on the only component that can't be replaced.
