LaCie drives are handsome objects with ordinary hard drives inside, and this one had stopped doing the ordinary part. It "wouldn't connect to my computer anymore", the owner reported, and the obvious suspect was chased properly: "tried it on several computers", with the same result everywhere — it "never works". The owner read that as a connection problem. Read it once more with the emphasis moved: a connection problem that is identical on every computer, every port and every cable isn't a connection problem — it's a drive problem wearing the connection's clothes. The owner's testing was better than the owner's conclusion, and that's the useful kind of wrong. Several computers, same silence: that pattern acquits the computers, their ports, their drivers and — tested or not — the cables, because a genuine connection fault varies with the connection. What's left is the box itself, which contains two suspects: the enclosure's USB bridge (LaCie's own electronics, translating the drive to USB) and the drive within — its board, or the firmware it must boot from its own platters before it can answer anything.
