By the time this enquiry reached us, the survey work was finished: the owner had "placed this USB stick in multiple computers and none of them seem to recognise" it — and had been told, correctly, that the fault lay within the stick itself. Universal refusal is diagnostic gold, unwelcome as it feels: one computer's silence might mean a port, a driver, a bad morning; every computer's silence means the component whose job is the introduction — the stick's controller, or the internal connection feeding it — has failed where it stands. When no computer will recognise a stick, stop asking computers — the memory chip holding the files is read directly on a programmer, and it was never asked to introduce itself at all.

Recognition is a ceremony with fixed roles. The computer supplies power and asks; the stick's controller answers — name, size, readiness — and only then does a drive letter appear. The memory chip, where your files actually live, is backstage throughout: it speaks only to the controller, never to the computer. So when the ceremony fails identically everywhere, the diagnosis writes itself: the front-of-house component is down. What no amount of trying can tell you from outside — and what matters most — is that backstage is usually untouched.
Multiple machines was sound method, and it's now complete. Each further attempt re-powers a failing component and adds mechanical wear to a connector that may itself be the problem; neither improves. The stick has given a consistent answer to a well-designed experiment. The next instrument isn't another USB port — it's a microscope, and after that a programmer.
Chip-level recovery sidesteps the failed ceremony entirely. The memory chip is lifted from the board and read raw, every page, no controller involved. The raw dump is scrambled — controllers spread and interleave data in proprietary patterns — so the pattern is worked out and reversed, reconstructing the logical contents, and the files are carved from that by content and individually verified. The stick never gets recognised again. It doesn't need to be.
Opened under the stereo microscope, the internal suspects — controller, bond connections, memory — examined and the failure confirmed. The NAND comes off under hot air and is read completely on the programmer. The scrambling is reconstructed and undone, PhotoRec carves the files by content, and each one is opened to prove it whole before delivery on fresh media.
Files off the chip, ceremony permanently cancelled. The diagnostic costs nothing and reports within two working days of the stick arriving; the quote is a single written figure, fixed. Chip-off work is physical, so half is due before the bench begins — the balance only when your files are demonstrably back, and never for an attempt that fails.
Retire it from the port circuit — the experiment has concluded, and repetition only wears the evidence. Skip recovery software too: every tool on a computer must reach the stick through the very controller that's stopped answering, so the cleverest software in the world queues behind a dead receptionist. Keep the stick dry, uncrushed and unopened (home chip-work goes wrong at the first hot-air stage), and send it in with a note of what it held. Backstage is usually intact.
