No Light, but It Sounds Normal

Owners hear more than they realise, and this report was better evidence than most benches get. The Seagate had "stopped working out of the blue"; now "the light doesn't come on and the hard drive doesn't register" — and yet it was "still making the same sounds as if it was working normally". The owner hoped that meant software. It means something better-defined: a drive that spins up with its familiar voice has a healthy motor and, in all likelihood, healthy heads — while a dead light and no registration mean the board's interface side has stopped doing its half of the job. Normal sounds with no light acquit the mechanism and accuse the electronics — a board fault, repaired with this drive's own firmware carried over, leaves the platters untouched.

Work through the owner's three observations like a checklist, because together they solve the case. The sounds are normal: the spindle motor runs, the heads perform their start-up sweep — the mechanical drive is well. The light is dead: the enclosure's electronics aren't powering their indicator, which takes the diagnosis onto the board. Nothing registers: the interface — the board's other duty — isn't talking either. One component explains all three at once, and it's the one component whose failure leaves the data entirely alone.

The hope that it's software is natural and worth answering precisely: a software problem — corruption, driver trouble, a broken filesystem — happens on a drive the computer can still see. Something detected-but-unreadable is software's signature. Something absent entirely, on a drive that sounds alive, is electrical. That's better news than the software hope, in truth: file-level corruption can nibble at the data itself, while a board failure merely switches off the lights in front of it.

One rule separates a proper board repair from an internet tragedy: a drive's board is not a spare part, it's a passport. Modern drives store calibration data — adaptives, unique to each drive's platters and heads — in the board's ROM, and a donor board without that ROM transferred leaves the drive a stranger to its own surfaces. The classic forum move, 'buy the same model on eBay and swap boards', fails on exactly this. The repair that works fixes the original board where possible, and where it isn't, moves the original ROM to the donor so the drive keeps its own memory of itself.

Don't keep power-cycling to watch for the light; a board that's failed can fail further, and some failures take the protection diodes with them. And don't order a donor board: without this drive's ROM moved across, the swap can't work, and a wrong-voltage moment can turn an electrical fault into an electrical casualty.
