The Corners Were Crushed

Crush cases arrive with the worst photographs and, surprisingly often, decent prognoses. This Toshiba had taken serious compression — the damage extensive across all four corners — and "the disk no longer runs"; but the owner's survey included the detail that carries the case: "the center wasn't chewed". Geometry is on the data's side here. A drive's corners are chassis, mounting points and board edge; its centre is the spindle, and stacked upon it, the platters. Crushed corners distort the frame around the data; a spared centre usually means spared platters — the mechanism is freed or the platters rehomed in clean air, and the frame's fate stays cosmetic. What crush damage cannot be given is a test run: a bent chassis holds its components in wrong relation, and spinning them there is how the platters join the casualty list.

The decode

A hard drive's layout puts its most replaceable parts at the perimeter and its only irreplaceable one in the middle. Corners take mounting screws and absorb casework; the board runs along the underside; the head assembly parks toward one edge. The platters — the sole component that is the data rather than machinery for reaching it — sit clamped at the centre spindle, and rigid disks in a stiff clamp resist regional crushing remarkably well. 'The center wasn't chewed' is therefore not a consolation prize of an observation. It's the observation: the component that can't be replaced appears to have sat out the accident.

Why the disk 'no longer runs' follows directly: deformation. Bend a drive's frame and its precision relationships bend with it — a spindle minutely tilted, a head assembly whose sweep now intersects where it should skim, a board cracked at a corner mount. Each stops a drive from running, and none of them, crucially, is the recording. But the same fact writes the case's one iron rule: no power, not once, not briefly. A straight drive that won't run is safe; a bent drive made to run is grinding its geometry against its own platters. Crush cases are lost after the crush, at the wall socket, more often than under whatever did the crushing.

In clean air the crush is worked like the structural problem it is. The frame's distortion is mapped; where it can be relieved and trued with the platters undisturbed, the drive is made runnable enough to image. Where it can't, the platter stack transfers — as one, in registration — to a matched donor chassis with sound corners and matched heads. Either road ends the same way: the centre that rode out the accident, imaged gently, its contents carried off the bent hardware for good.

Holding a crushed drive

Fight the urge to try it 'just to see' — that single test run is the most dangerous event left in this drive's life, worse than the crush itself if the frame is bent. Don't straighten anything by hand either; a chassis eased back by feel moves the internals a second time, unsupervised. Photograph it for the insurer if one's involved, then immobilise it in firm padding — it should not shift in the box — and send it unpowered and unstraightened. Crushed-but-centred drives recover far better than they look. Let the looks stay deceiving.
