Another Engineer Found Platter Damage

Second opinions in this trade start with respecting the first one. An 8TB Seagate Barracuda had been with another engineer, who declined it, "stating that there was physical damage to the platter surface" — a finding we treat as probably accurate, because engineers who open drives don't tend to invent scoring. What changes the case is the request attached to it: not everything, but "one folder from it of around 1TB as a necessity". Platter damage is almost never total — it's a map of lost regions and intact ones, and a recovery aimed at one folder only needs the regions that folder occupies. The first engineer answered whether the drive could be repaired. The question that matters is different: how much of the surface still reads, and does the needed folder live there? That one is settled by imaging, not by verdict.

'Physical damage to the platter surface' describes a real and serious finding: somewhere, heads have contacted the recording surface and scored it, and scored regions are gone — no equipment anywhere reads a groove. But an 8TB drive holds its data across an enormous acreage of surface, and contact damage is local by nature: a landing zone, an arc, a band. The engineering question is never 'is there damage?' once damage is found. It's 'where does the damage stop?' — and the answer to that is a map, drawn under magnification and then proven sector by sector on imaging equipment built for exactly this terrain.

The single-folder request transforms the arithmetic. A full recovery of a damaged 8TB drive is a long campaign against diminishing odds; one terabyte out of eight is a targeted operation. Filesystem structures, once recovered, say precisely where the folder's files sit — and if fortune has put them clear of the scoring, the damage becomes scenery. If they straddle it, the recovery brings back what lies on sound surface, honestly accounted. Either way, the imaging runs intact-regions-first, so the likeliest material is banked before the difficult zones are even attempted.

A word on the first engineer, because trade handoffs deserve fairness: declining this drive may have been the right call for their bench. Working a drive with surface damage without deep donor stock and hardware imaging that can skip, pace and retry per-region risks making it worse, and stopping was the responsible alternative. Their finding stands. It just isn't the same thing as the recovery being impossible — 'unrepairable' and 'unreadable' part company exactly here.

Two things to do, in order. First, get the drive back unopened-any-further and keep it that way — every additional spin on damaged surface widens the scoring, so no demonstration runs for anyone. Second, before sending it on, write down what actually matters on it, as precisely as you can: paths, folder names, file types. A targeted recovery is a different and better proposition than 'everything', and the difference is often what turns a declined drive into a delivered folder. Declined isn't done. It's just declined there.
