This drive hadn't gone silent — it had gone slow, which is its own kind of warning. The computer announced it "needs to be repaired", and though the drive would still connect, "nothing can be saved on it" and any attempt to open its contents sat on "loading" for ten minutes and produced nothing. That's a drive failing mid-sentence: it begins to answer and can't finish, usually because the areas holding its directory have become hard going to read. A drive that hangs isn't empty — it's struggling, and the worst thing it can be given is more time to struggle. The right move is one patient, read-only pass on equipment that manages the weak areas, then rebuild everything from the copy.

'Loading' is what a computer says while it waits for a drive to hand over the directory, and ten minutes of it means the drive is trying and failing on the same difficult ground over and over. The usual cause is media degradation — patches of the disk that have become slow or unreliable to read — and the cruel arithmetic is that filesystem structures live in fixed places, so if a weak patch lands under the directory, the whole drive turns to treacle even though most of its surface is fine.
Two well-meant responses make this worse. The first is patience of the wrong kind: leaving it churning for hours, forcing the heads back over the failing regions on every attempt, wearing the weak patches weaker. The second is taking Windows up on its offer to repair — a repair pass writes to the very structures that are struggling, on a drive already having trouble reading them. Both feel like doing something. Both spend the drive's remaining goodwill on nothing.
The professional route inverts the priorities. The drive comes off the computer entirely and is imaged read-only under hardware control, where the imaging kit — unlike Windows — decides how long to wait, when to move on, and when to come back. The healthy majority of the disk is captured quickly and banked; the difficult regions are returned to gently, on equipment that won't hang and won't push. Then the filesystem is rebuilt from the image, at leisure, with the original out of harm's way. What ten minutes of 'loading' couldn't deliver, a managed image usually can.

Close the window, eject it if the system will let you, and unplug it — mid-hang if need be. Above all, don't run a deep scan overnight: hobby software will happily flog a weakening drive for twelve hours to produce a list of filenames it can't actually read.
