Filesystems are bookkeepers, and bookkeepers hate being interrupted mid-entry. This USB stick was pulled from the PC while being written to, and its ledgers show it: "I can see the folders there I can't access any", the owner reported, and worse, on opening them "windows explorer crashes" — with attempted scans "just not completing". Records left half-updated by an abrupt removal are internally contradictory, and software that reads them trustingly walks into the contradiction and falls over. The files themselves are usually all present — it's the paperwork about them that's inconsistent, and inconsistent paperwork is repaired on a copy, never re-read endlessly on the original.

A write to a filesystem is several updates pretending to be one: data blocks land, the file's record is amended, the folder's index adjusts, the allocation map catches up. Pull the stick partway through and the pretence collapses — some entries describe the new state, some the old, and the structure as a whole now asserts two incompatible truths. Explorer crashing isn't Windows being fragile; it's software following the paperwork into a contradiction it has no answer for. The crash is the inconsistency, experienced at speed.
The instinct to scan-and-rescan makes a bad situation slower but also riskier. Utilities that 'check and repair' — chkdsk chief among them — resolve contradictions by rewriting the records, and their resolutions can orphan or truncate the very files you want; scans that hang mid-way can leave their own half-finished bookkeeping behind. Meanwhile every tool so far has been reading the one damaged original. The professional move is to stop asking the patient to testify and take a deposition instead: one complete read-only image, captured in a way that a contradictory region can't derail.
On the image, the contradiction gets untangled at leisure. The interrupted transaction is identified — which records reflect the unfinished write — and the structure is rebuilt to a consistent state, folders restored, names intact. Anything whose records were mangled past reconstruction is recovered the blunt way, carved from the data by content. The file being written at the moment of the pull is the one honest casualty candidate: it may exist only as far as it got. Everything else was on the stick before the interruption, and interruptions don't reach backwards.
Write-blocked immediately — no scan, however well-meant, gets another go at the original. A full read-only image, the capture engineered to shrug off the inconsistent regions that hang ordinary copies. R-Studio then rebuilds the interrupted structures on the image, restoring the folders Explorer couldn't survive opening; PhotoRec carves by content wherever records defeated repair. Everything recovered is opened, checked and delivered on fresh media.
The folders reopened from a copy that contains no contradictions, the crash-on-contact behaviour retired along with the stick. This is logical recovery, and it runs on logical terms: free diagnostic, reported within two working days of arrival; one fixed written figure; no fix, no fee if the files can't be brought back. The pull took a second — the recovery, done properly, doesn't take much longer.
Stop scanning. The third scan won't finish where the second didn't, and every 'repair' offer on the way is a rewrite of the records you need preserved. Don't copy-paste at the folders hoping one attempt threads through, and don't format-and-restore on the promise of recovery software — the format is real, the promise varies. The stick needs one write-blocked image and some patient bookkeeping, which is cheap, quick and quiet. And in future: the eject button costs two seconds, which is roughly what it's worth to keep filesystem bookkeepers mid-entry happy.
