It Fell and Won't Be Accessed

The report was two facts long, and two facts were enough: the drive "was damaged (fell on the floor)" and now "cannot be accessed from a computer". A WD My Passport Ultra, desk height, hard floor — the commonest accident in portable storage, and one of the most survivable when it's handled with restraint. Inside a portable drive the read/write heads are the lightest, most exposed components, and a drop jolts them first: knocked from their geometry, they can no longer read, and a drive that can't read can't present itself to anything. A fall breaks the heads' ability to read far more often than it breaks the platters' recording — the drive needs opening in clean air, not testing on another computer.

Gravity's effect on a portable drive is decided by what was happening inside at the moment it landed. Parked heads — the resting state — sit clear of the platters and often ride out a fall. Heads caught working, or jolted hard enough regardless, come out of the geometry they depend on: too high to read, canted wrong, or in the worst case down against the surface.
