Some drives get a second chance because somebody couldn't quite throw them away. This one "stopped working years ago" and was kept in that state until curiosity, or need, brought it back out — whereupon "it makes a mechanical noise, and is not even recognised by Windows". Both symptoms belong to the same story: something in the mechanism, heads or motor, has failed, the noise is that failure audible, and a drive that can't ready itself mechanically never gets as far as introducing itself to Windows. Years in a drawer don't deepen a mechanical fault — the recording on the platters has simply been waiting, and it keeps for decades. Older drives want older-fluent equipment, and the bench keeps exactly that.

A mechanical noise from a hard drive is the machine describing its own fault. Grinding, buzzing, rhythmic ticking — each is some part of the head-and-motor assembly failing to do a precise job at speed, and while the noise varies, the consequence doesn't: a drive that can't complete its start-up mechanics never reports for duty, which is why Windows sees nothing at all. The absence from Windows isn't a second fault. It's the first one, heard from further away.
The years change less than people fear. Data on platters is magnetic recording, and it holds — drives from decades back read perfectly well once their mechanics are put right. What the years do change is the parts situation: donor heads and motors for older drive families aren't on anyone's shelf by accident. A lab that's been at this a long time holds donor stock going back generations of hardware, and equipment old enough in its manners to talk to drives Windows gave up on years since.
What matters most now is what always matters: no more power. The owner's restraint — years of it, as it happens — has done the platters nothing but good. A mechanical fault exercised is a mechanical fault worsened, and the only remaining risk to this data is enthusiasm between now and the parcel.
